Almost a year ago (in May 2022), we, six students from IES El Astillero had the opportunity to do an Erasmus mobility to Germany, to the city “Paderborn”. We remember the day we were selected for the trip; we couldn't just believe it. We were expecting a trip full of experiences and so it was. We could learn about the cultures of Germany, Poland, and Italy, which were the countries of the students on the mobility programme. Honestly, we did enjoy Germany, from Munich where we stopped over, to North Rhine Westphalia, where our city was located. At first, we had high expectations, and we must admit they were all fulfilled.
We have been part of a huge cultural exchange between different countries with their respective languages which seemed fascinating at first. During the welcome dinner, everyone was nervous, and we wouldn't sometimes understand each other. However, they were enthusiastic and receptive which made us feel very integrated overall. We quickly started to feel comfortable with each other and made many friends as a result. The next day, we were already able to communicate with each other without any major problem. Thanks to this week, our vocabulary expanded incredibly and our level of English improved exponentially.
Those days were filled with activities, games, guided tours, and good moments. One of the first activities, the gymkhana through Paderborn, turned out to be a lot of fun. We made several teams with one member from each of the countries, in a way that each team was formed by, as the joke goes, an Italian, a German, a Polish and a Spanish. We got to know each other personally, learned about Paderborn and its monuments and corners, where we were had to take pictures and passing different tests. It must be remarked our collaboration, effort, and teamwork, to be the winners of this game.
As for Thursday, we had to make our expositions at high school, as well as recording interviews with immigrant students. The school was specialized in integrating immigrant people. Since some of them didn’t know English, we got help from German students for translating and editing the videos with subtitles. Some of their backstories were tragic but also mind-opening. During the breaks, we could interact with the other students and stroll around the high school.
Once again, all the students gathered at the school where we were given an explanation about the activities on that Wednesday. The objective was to analyse the competences of each student such as motivation, creativity, and teamwork. We formed different groups in each activity. The first one was about designing and drawing a city, which required a lot of communication among students, and this made it interesting. For the next activity, we were asked to build piles of plastic cups while being careful not to drop them. Finally, before leaving high school, we designed some posters on PC. That evening, all the groups went to a bowling alley in Paderborn (we couldn’t stop laughing at our “professional” throws). Before returning to the hotel, we hanged out with the German group at the fun fairs and enjoyed the amusement rides.
On Thursday, we visited several companies that integrate immigrants. We also had the chance to record interviews with the bosses and the workers. The formality and the appearance of these companies really caught our attention. Later, our group decided to spend time at a shopping centre, where we played pool and other games.
Friday was the last day we would see our Erasmus friends. That morning, we arrived at a museum/castle where we were given a guided tour and, also, we participated in a workshop. After that, we had free time and us, the Spanish, went for a walk. It was raining but it didn’t stop us from enjoy a stroll around a pretty lake. When coming back to our hotel, we found out that there had been a tornado in Paderborn! It was surreal and so we couldn’t believe it. We were terrified, but, luckily, none of the students was harmed. Finally, we attended the farewell dinner and had to say goodbye to our new friends.
The following and last day was great as well. Our group planned a trip to Münster, a wonderful city with many landmarks. The city was known for being full of bicycles. Of course, we played geocaching, as well as on the other days. Then, we returned to Paderborn where we packed up our luggage for our plane to Spain, on Sunday.
All good things come to an end, and so did our adventure in Germany. It was certainly an enriching experience for all of us, not only because we were able to improve our level and use of English, but also because of the wonderful people we met throughout the week and the great memories we made. We were able to see how life is like in other countries and the German customs and traditions, as well as learning about the educational system in Germany and some jobs. As a result, we could realise the differences of lifestyle that exist between Spain and Germany. All in all, it was an incredible adventure full of anecdotes, laughter, and fantastic moments that we won't forget. Thank you for everything Paderborn!
